The GLE is Mercedes-Benz's large five-seat luxury SUV, sitting between the GLC and the seven-seat GLS. Our verdict on the GLE
The GLE is a comfortable, roomy five-seater with a big boot and solid all-wheel drive across the range. The 300d AMG Line is the entry point at ₹1 crore, but it rides on steel springs; the 300d Night Edition adds air suspension and a head-up display for ₹5 lakh, which we think is the smarter buy. The 450d is the best GLE: a smooth six-cylinder diesel with 750 Nm, air suspension and ventilated seats. The petrol 450 suits city owners who prefer petrol; oddly it uses adaptive dampers rather than air springs. Against the BMW X5 the GLE is well matched; the Audi Q7 costs less and adds a third row. If you need seven seats, step up to the GLS, which starts at about ₹1.38 crore.

Mercedes-Benz GLE: the big five-seat mercedes
The GLE is the updated second-generation model. Mercedes-Benz India sells three engines: the GLE 300d with a 2.0-litre diesel (269 HP, 550 Nm), the GLE 450d with a 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel (367 HP, 750 Nm) and the GLE 450 with a 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol (367 HP, 500 Nm). All use a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, a 9-speed automatic and 4MATIC all-wheel drive.
The GLE is 4,924 mm long with a 2,995 mm wheelbase, an 85-litre tank and a 630-litre boot. Every version has a panoramic sunroof, Burmester sound, a 360-degree camera, Active Parking Assist and blind-spot assist. The Night Editions add black exterior details and black leather, and come only in Obsidian Black or MANUFAKTUR Alpine Grey.
Prices run from ₹1 crore to about ₹1.17 crore ex-showroom. Rivals include the BMW X5, Audi Q7 and Volvo XC90. Mercedes-Benz India does not publish fuel-economy or ground clearance figures, so ask owners of the same engine about real-world mileage before choosing between petrol and diesel. Service is through Mercedes-Benz dealers, mostly in larger cities.
GLE 300d or GLE 450d?
The 300d is enough for most city driving. The 450d costs ₹16.5 lakh more than the 300d AMG Line but adds a far stronger six-cylinder engine, air suspension, ventilated seats and adaptive damping. For frequent highway trips with a full car, the 450d is worth it.
Is the Night Edition worth it?
On the 300d, yes, because it adds air suspension and a head-up display for ₹5 lakh. On the petrol 450, the ₹2.5 lakh extra buys mainly looks and black nappa leather.
GLE or GLS?
The GLS is longer, has a powered third row and rear-seat screens, and starts at about ₹1.38 crore. If you rarely carry more than five people, the GLE is cheaper and easier to park.
Petrol or diesel GLE?
The 450 petrol and 450d diesel have the same power, but the diesel has 250 Nm more torque, air suspension and costs only ₹5 lakh more. For most buyers who drive long distances, the diesel is the better pick.
