Our verdict on the X5
The X5 remains one of the best all-round luxury SUVs in India. Both six-cylinder engines are smooth and strong, all-wheel drive is standard, and even the entry versions come with the M Sport package and 21-inch wheels. The base cars at ₹96.9 lakh and ₹98.9 lakh ex-showroom are where the value is; the M Sport Pro versions add about ₹14.5 lakh for leather, an illuminated grille and different wheels, which is a lot for mostly cosmetic gains. BMW claims the same 12 km/l for both engines, but the diesel's extra torque suits highway work. BMW India does not publish boot size or ground clearance for the X5. If you need seven seats, the X7 starts at ₹1.32 crore.
Good things
- Smooth, powerful six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines.
- All-wheel drive and M Sport package on every version.
- Diesel costs only slightly more than the petrol.
Could be better
- M Sport Pro versions cost about ₹14.5 lakh more for mostly cosmetic upgrades.
- Five seats only; the X7 is needed for a third row.
- BMW India does not publish boot size or ground clearance.

BMW X5: a six-cylinder family SUV with all-wheel drive
BMW India sells the X5 in four versions. The xDrive40i has a 3.0-litre turbo petrol inline-six with 381 PS and 540 Nm; the xDrive30d has a 3.0-litre turbo diesel inline-six with 298 PS and 670 Nm. Both use an eight-speed Steptronic Sport automatic and xDrive all-wheel drive, and BMW claims 12 km/l for each.
The base versions come with the M Sport package, 21-inch alloy wheels, Sensafin upholstery, roof rails and aluminium running boards. The M Sport Pro versions add BMW Individual 'Merino' leather, the illuminated Iconic Glow kidney grille, M light-alloy wheels and two extra M paint colours. Engines and drivetrain do not change between trims.
Petrol or diesel X5?
The petrol is quicker and quieter at idle; the diesel has 130 Nm more torque, which makes highway overtaking easier. BMW claims 12 km/l for both, and the diesel costs ₹2 lakh more.
Is the M Sport Pro worth it?
It adds about ₹14.5 lakh for Merino leather, an illuminated grille, M wheels and extra paint choices. The engines and chassis are the same, so the base versions are better value.
X5 or X7?
The X7 is larger with a third row of seats and starts at ₹1.32 crore. If five seats are enough, the X5 is easier to park and costs about ₹35 lakh less.
