Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology
The electric G-Class, with electric motors producing 587 HP, the G's upright body and serious off-road functions such as G-TURN. It suits a buyer who wants a G-Class with silent, instant performance and the novelty of turning on the spot, and who has home charging and does not do long highway trips often.

Our verdict on the G 580 with EQ Technology
The G 580 is the most technically interesting G-Class. Electric motors give it 587 HP, and Autocar India reports 1,164 Nm, a 116 kWh battery and a 473 km WLTP range. Off-road it adds tricks no combustion G can do, such as G-TURN and G-STEERING. At ₹3.15 crore ex-showroom it sits between the G 450d and G 63. The trade-offs are weight (3,085 kg kerb), a range that will be well below 473 km in real use, and a charging network that still limits long trips in India. If you mostly drive in and around the city and want the quietest G, it makes sense. For touring, the G 450d is cheaper and more practical.
Good things
- Strong, silent performance
- Unique off-road functions like G-TURN and G-STEERING
- Keeps the G-Class look and presence
- No fuel bills if charged at home
Could be better
- Very heavy at over 3 tonnes
- Real-world range will be well under the WLTP claim
- Torque, battery and range not published by Mercedes-Benz India
- Resale of an electric G is untested

Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology: the G-Class without the engine
The G 580 with EQ Technology is the first electric G-Class. It keeps the familiar boxy body and a ladder-frame chassis, and Mercedes-Benz India lists 587 HP, 0-100 km/h in 4.7 seconds and a 180 km/h top speed. Autocar India and Evo India report 1,164 Nm of torque, a 116 kWh battery and a 473 km WLTP range; Mercedes-Benz India does not publish these figures.
In place of mechanical locking differentials it uses individually controlled motors. That enables G-TURN, which can rotate the car almost on the spot on loose ground, and G-STEERING, which tightens the turning circle off-road at up to 25 km/h. A selectable low-range ratio and an off-road crawl function are standard, as are adaptive damping, MBUX rear-seat entertainment, DISTRONIC adaptive cruise and Active Multicontour seats. Mercedes-Benz India lists it at ₹3.15 crore ex-showroom in October 2026. It charges at up to 11 kW AC and up to 210 kW DC. The boot holds 620 litres.
How far can the G 580 go on a charge?
Press reports quote 473 km on the WLTP cycle. A heavy, boxy SUV loses range quickly at highway speeds and with air-conditioning on, so plan on much less in Indian conditions. Mercedes-Benz India does not publish a figure.
G 580 or G 450d?
The G 450d is ₹25 lakh cheaper, refuels in minutes and has a 100-litre tank. The G 580 is quicker, silent and has unique off-road functions. For city use with home charging, the G 580; for touring, the diesel.
Is the electric G a real off-roader?
Yes. It has a low-range ratio, crawl control and torque control at each wheel, plus G-TURN and G-STEERING for tight trails. Ground clearance is not published by Mercedes-Benz India.
What about charging at home?
It has an 11 kW AC on-board charger, so an overnight charge at home is the practical routine. Check that your home or society can install a suitable wallbox before buying.
