Mercedes-Benz G-Class

The diesel G-Class, Mercedes-Benz's boxy, body-on-frame off-roader, with a 3.0 six-cylinder making 367 HP and 750 Nm. It suits a buyer who wants the G-Class look and real off-road hardware with the lower fuel bills of a diesel, and does not need the AMG V8.

Our verdict on the G-Class

The G 450d is the G-Class we would buy. It keeps the ladder-frame body, three locking differentials and low-range gearbox that make the G a real off-roader, adds a strong 750 Nm diesel and a 100-litre tank, and costs ₹2.90 crore ex-showroom, well below the G 63's ₹3.80 crore. The G-Class also holds its value well in India. The downsides are those of any G: a firm, upright ride, a narrow cabin for its price, a 13.6-metre turning circle and heavy running costs. If you will never leave tarmac, a Range Rover or GLS gives more comfort and space for the money. If you want the G's character and toughness, the diesel is the smart choice.

Good things

  • Genuine off-road hardware with three locking differentials
  • Strong, long-legged diesel with a 100-litre tank
  • Iconic design that holds its value
  • Much cheaper than the G 63

Could be better

  • Upright, firm ride compared with softer luxury SUVs
  • Cabin space is modest for the price
  • Wide turning circle of 13.6 metres
  • Mercedes-Benz India does not publish its body width

Mercedes-Benz G-Class: the sensible way into a G

The G-Class has been in production since 1979, and the current version keeps its ladder-frame chassis, upright body and three 100 per cent differential locks. Mercedes-Benz India sells the combustion G-Class in two forms: this G 450d AMG Line, and the AMG G 63. The electric G 580 is a third option. We cover both of those on separate pages.

The G 450d has a 2,989 cc six-cylinder diesel with 367 HP and 750 Nm, plus a 48-volt mild-hybrid boost of 20 HP. It uses a nine-speed 9G-TRONIC automatic with a low-range transfer case and permanent all-wheel drive. Mercedes-Benz claims 0-100 km/h in 5.8 seconds. Standard equipment includes adaptive damping, 20-inch AMG wheels, Active Multicontour seats with ENERGIZING massage, the OFFROAD COCKPIT display and MBUX navigation. It is 4,825 mm long, has a 640-litre boot and a 100-litre tank. Mercedes-Benz India lists it at ₹2.90 crore ex-showroom in October 2026.

G 450d or AMG G 63?

The G 63 has a 585 HP V8 and costs ₹90 lakh more. The G 450d has 750 Nm, better range from its diesel, and the same off-road hardware. Unless you want the V8 and the AMG image, the diesel is the better buy.

Is the G-Class comfortable on long drives?

It is more comfortable than older G-Classes, with adaptive damping and massage seats, but the upright body and off-road chassis still ride and handle differently from a Range Rover or GLS. Test it on a highway before buying.

Can it really go off-road?

Yes. Three 100 per cent locking differentials, a low-range gearbox and a body-on-frame chassis give it serious off-road ability, more than most luxury SUVs. Ground clearance is not published by Mercedes-Benz India.

Does the G-Class hold its value?

The G-Class has historically held its value well in India, helped by long waiting periods. Resale depends on condition, colour and market conditions at the time you sell.
