Our verdict on the XEV 9S
The XEV 9S fills a real gap: a three-row electric SUV with long range at a price well below imported rivals. Standard kit is generous, with triple screens, an opening panoramic roof, six airbags and ESC on every version, and the 79 kWh models claim close to 680 km. The third row is best for children or shorter trips, and the boot is small with all seats up, which Mahindra does not even quote. Top versions cost about ₹30 lakh before the charger. If you need seven seats and can charge at home, the 9S is the most sensible electric choice in India right now. If you rarely use the third row, the XEV 9e gives you a bigger boot for similar money.

Mahindra XEV 9S: a three-row electric for big families
The XEV 9S is a three-row electric SUV built on Mahindra's INGLO platform. It is 4,737 mm long, 1,747 mm tall and has a 2,762 mm wheelbase, with 205 mm of ground clearance. It comes as a seven-seater, or as a six-seater with second-row captain chairs on the upper trims. With the third row folded, the boot holds 527 litres, and there is a 150-litre front boot.
Three batteries are offered. The 59 kWh pack drives a 170 kW rear motor for a claimed 521 km. The 70 kWh pack has a 180 kW motor and 600 km. The 79 kWh pack has a 210 kW motor and 679 km. All produce 380 Nm and drive the rear wheels. Mahindra quotes about 20 minutes for a 20 to 80 percent DC fast charge on a suitable charger.
Prices start at ₹20.65 lakh ex-showroom for the Pack One Above 59 kWh and go up to ₹30.15 lakh for the Pack Three Above six-seater. The 11.2 kW wall charger adds ₹75,000. Every version has six airbags, ESC, triple screens and an opening panoramic sunroof. The battery has a lifetime warranty for the first private owner, under Mahindra's conditions.
Six or seven seats?
The six-seater's captain chairs are more comfortable for two adults in the middle row and make it easier to reach the third row. The seven-seater carries one more person and costs ₹20,000 less. Choose based on how often you fill every seat.
Which battery makes sense?
The 59 kWh is fine for city use, but a fully loaded seven-seater uses more energy, so the 79 kWh is the safer choice for highway trips. It costs ₹2 lakh more on the Pack One Above and adds about 160 km of claimed range.
XEV 9S or a diesel XUV 7XO?
The XUV 7XO costs less to buy and can be refuelled anywhere, which suits frequent long trips. The XEV 9S costs far less to run with home charging, is quieter and has more technology. If you can charge at home and mostly drive within a few hundred kilometres, the 9S is worth the extra outlay.
Is the base Pack One Above well equipped?
Yes, more than most base versions. It has triple screens, an opening panoramic sunroof, six airbags, ESC and wireless phone mirroring. It misses ADAS, a 360-degree camera and premium audio, which arrive on Pack Two Above.
