Mercedes-Benz V-Class

The V-Class is Mercedes-Benz's luxury people carrier, sold in India as a six-seat extra-long model with a 3,430 mm wheelbase. Both the petrol and diesel cost the same, and the middle row has two ventilated luxury seats with footrests. It suits business owners and families who want chauffeur-driven comfort with much more space than a sedan.

Our verdict on the V-Class

The V-Class is the most practical way to be driven in a Mercedes. Its extra-long body gives the two middle-row luxury seats a lot of legroom, with footrests, ventilation and rear air-conditioning controls, and electric sliding doors make getting in easy. The diesel is our pick, because it costs the same as the petrol and has far more torque for a heavy van. At ₹1.40 crore it costs more than a Toyota Vellfire (from about ₹1.20 crore), which offers a hybrid and a plusher feel, and more than double a Kia Carnival. The V-Class counters with a longer cabin, the Mercedes badge and a strong diesel. It is large to park and manoeuvre in older city areas. Test the second-row seats against the Vellfire before you decide.

Good things

  • Very spacious six-seat cabin
  • Petrol and diesel at the same price
  • Electric sliding doors and luxury rear seats
  • Strong 500 Nm diesel

Could be better

  • Costs more than a Toyota Vellfire
  • Van-like driving position and size in town
  • Only one trim in India
  • No published boot figure with seats in place

Mercedes-Benz V-Class: a business-class lounge on wheels

The V-Class sold in India is the updated extra-long AVANTGARDE model. The V 300 has a 2.0-litre turbo petrol (231 PS, 370 Nm) with 48-volt technology, and the V 300 d a 2.0-litre diesel (237 PS, 500 Nm) that does 0-100 km/h in 8 seconds. Both use a 9-speed automatic and rear-wheel drive, and both cost ₹1.40 crore ex-showroom.

It is 5,370 mm long with a 3,430 mm wheelbase and seats six. Behind the front seats are two ventilated luxury seats with footrests, then two comfort seats. Standard equipment includes electric sliding doors on both sides, Burmester sound, MULTIBEAM LED headlamps, a 360-degree camera, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot and lane-keeping assist, a driver attention camera and rear climate control.

Rivals include the Toyota Vellfire and Kia Carnival. Mercedes-Benz India does not publish fuel-economy, ground clearance or a usable boot figure; luggage space behind the last row depends on how the seats are set on their rails. Its height and length mean you should check your parking space before buying.

V-Class or Toyota Vellfire?

The Vellfire costs less, has a strong-hybrid petrol and plush rear seats. The V-Class is longer, and offers a diesel with 500 Nm. Sit in both rear cabins before choosing.

Petrol or diesel V-Class?

They cost the same. The diesel has 500 Nm against the petrol's 370 Nm, which matters in a 2.5-tonne van with six people and luggage. Choose the petrol only if diesel age limits in your city are a concern.

How much luggage fits?

Mercedes quotes only a maximum load volume with the rear seats removed. With all six seats in place, space depends on where the seats sit on their rails. Take your usual luggage to the test drive.
