Mercedes-Benz GLC

The GLC is Mercedes-Benz's mid-size five-seat SUV and its best seller in this price band. India gets one well-loaded trim with a choice of a 258 HP petrol or a 197 HP diesel, both with all-wheel drive. It suits a family that wants a proper luxury SUV without stepping up to GLE money.

If you drive long distances, the diesel is the one. It costs only ₹1 lakh more than the petrol, has more torque and will go much further on a tank. Equipment is the same.

  • GLC 300 4MATIC₹77.00 lakh

For mostly city use, the petrol is quicker, quieter and ₹1 lakh cheaper. It is also the safer bet if diesel restrictions in your city worry you.

Our verdict on the GLC

The GLC is an easy luxury SUV to recommend. Mercedes India sells it in one rich trim, so there is no hunting for the right variant: panoramic roof, 360-degree camera, ventilated seats, Burmester audio and all-wheel drive come with both engines. The only real choice is fuel, and at a ₹1 lakh gap it comes down to how you drive. The cabin is roomy for five and the 620-litre boot is large for the class. Against a BMW X3 or Audi Q5 it is well matched on kit; drive both before you decide. If you want more space, the GLE starts at ₹1 crore. If you want a GLC with real pace, the AMG GLC 43 Coupé costs about ₹22 lakh more.

Good things

  • One fully loaded trim, so little left to add
  • Petrol and diesel priced within ₹1 lakh of each other
  • Large 620-litre boot
  • All-wheel drive as standard

Could be better

  • No cheaper, less-equipped version for tighter budgets
  • No official fuel-economy or ground clearance figures published
  • Choice of only five paints
  • Mercedes service and parts are costly outside big cities

Mercedes-Benz GLC: one trim, two fuels, little to add

The current GLC is the second generation, on sale in India in a single specification with two engines. The GLC 300 4MATIC uses a 2.0-litre turbo petrol with 258 HP and 400 Nm. The GLC 220d 4MATIC uses a 2.0-litre diesel with 197 HP and 440 Nm. Both have a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, a 9-speed automatic and all-wheel drive.

It is 4,716 mm long with a 2,888 mm wheelbase and a 620-litre boot. Standard kit includes a panoramic sunroof, 19-inch wheels, LED headlamps, ventilated and memory front seats, Burmester sound, a 360-degree camera with a transparent-bonnet view, Active Parking Assist, blind-spot and lane-keeping assist, and a fingerprint scanner.

Prices are ₹77 lakh for the petrol and ₹78 lakh for the diesel, ex-showroom. Rivals include the BMW X3, Audi Q5 and Volvo XC60. Mercedes-Benz India does not publish fuel-economy or ground clearance figures for the GLC, so ask the dealer for real-world numbers from existing owners. Servicing is through Mercedes-Benz dealers, which are concentrated in larger cities.

Petrol or diesel GLC?

The equipment is identical and the diesel costs ₹1 lakh more. Choose the diesel if you cover long highway distances, since its extra torque and range help. Choose the petrol for city driving, quicker acceleration and fewer concerns about diesel age limits in some cities.

Is there a cheaper GLC?

No. Mercedes-Benz India sells the GLC only in this one trim. If ₹77 lakh is too much, look at the Mercedes GLA, which is smaller but costs far less.

GLC or GLE?

The GLE is longer, has a bigger cabin and offers a six-cylinder diesel, but it starts at ₹1 crore. For most families of four or five, the GLC has enough space and saves over ₹20 lakh.

Can the GLC handle rough roads?

It has all-wheel drive, an off-road package with underbody protection and a transparent-bonnet camera view. Mercedes does not publish a ground clearance figure, so check steep ramps and speed breakers on a test drive.
