BMW X3

The current-generation X3, BMW's mid-size SUV, with all-wheel drive as standard. India gets a 258 PS petrol in M Sport Pro trim or a 197 PS diesel, priced within ₹1.3 lakh of each other. It suits a family that wants more performance and presence than an X1, without the size and cost of an X5.

Our verdict on the X3

The new X3 is a well-judged mid-size SUV, and BMW India's pricing makes the choice simple. The 258 PS petrol 30 xDrive M Sport Pro costs ₹76.9 lakh ex-showroom, ₹1.3 lakh less than the diesel, yet is much quicker and better equipped. The diesel earns its place only for high-mileage owners. Both have all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic. BMW India does not publish boot space, width, height or ground clearance for this generation, and aggregator figures conflict, so check practicality in the showroom. The X1 LWB is far cheaper with a similar rear seat, while the X5 is bigger and smoother but costs about ₹20 lakh more.

Good things

  • All-wheel drive and strong engines in both versions.
  • Petrol M Sport Pro is quick and well equipped for its price.
  • Efficient diesel option for long-distance drivers.

Could be better

  • BMW India publishes few practical figures for this generation.
  • Only two versions, both priced above ₹76 lakh.
  • The X1 LWB offers similar rear space for much less.

BMW X3: the mid-size SUV with all-wheel drive as standard

The current X3 is 4,755 mm long with a 2,865 mm wheelbase, and every Indian version has xDrive all-wheel drive, an eight-speed automatic and a 48V electrical system. The X3 30 xDrive M Sport Pro uses a 2.0-litre turbo petrol with 258 PS and 400 Nm, and BMW claims 0-100 km/h in 6.3 seconds and 14.61 km/l.

The X3 xDrive20d M Sport has a 2.0-litre turbo diesel with 197 PS and 400 Nm, claims 17.86 km/l and does 0-100 km/h in 7.7 seconds. The petrol M Sport Pro adds 20-inch M wheels, the illuminated kidney grille and a Harman Kardon sound system. An earlier X3 20 xDrive petrol is no longer offered. Both versions are M Sport models.

Petrol or diesel X3?

The petrol is ₹1.3 lakh cheaper, faster and better equipped. The diesel uses less fuel on long runs. Unless you drive more than about 20,000 km a year, the petrol makes more sense.

X3 or X1 LWB?

The X1 LWB costs about ₹27 lakh less and has a roomy rear seat, but it is front-wheel drive with a small engine. The X3 is more powerful, more refined and has all-wheel drive.

Is the X3 big enough for a family of five?

It is a five-seater with good rear space for two adults and a child. BMW India does not publish its boot size, so bring your usual luggage to the test drive.
