Our verdict on the Thar ROXX

The Thar ROXX fixes the biggest problem with the three-door Thar: it has proper rear doors, a rear seat adults can use and a decent boot. It rides better than you would expect from a ladder-frame SUV, every version has six airbags and ESC, and the diesel 4WD versions are seriously capable off-road. The variant list is confusing, though. Engine outputs change with trim and gearbox, the Star Edition skips ADAS, and 4WD is diesel only. It is also tall and heavy, so fuel economy is modest and it rolls more than a crossover. If you never leave the tarmac, a Scorpio-N or a monocoque SUV such as the XUV 7XO will be more comfortable. If you want a family car that can also go properly off-road, the ROXX is one of the most complete choices at its price.

Mahindra Thar ROXX: the thar that works as a family car

The Thar ROXX is the five-door version of the Thar, sold alongside the three-door Thar. It is 4,428 mm long with a 2,850 mm wheelbase, 1,923 mm tall and has five seats and a 447-litre boot. It keeps a ladder frame, a rigid rear axle and, on the diesel 4WD versions, a part-time 4x4 system with low range, rated to wade through 650 mm of water.

Both engines come from Mahindra's bigger SUVs. The 2.0-litre turbo petrol makes 119 kW and 330 Nm with the manual or 130 kW and 380 Nm with the automatic, and drives the rear wheels only. The 2.2-litre diesel makes 111.9 kW and 330 Nm in most versions, and 128.6 kW and 400 Nm in the AX5L, AX7L and Star Edition automatics. 4WD is offered on the diesel MX5, AX5L and AX7L.

Prices run from ₹12.52 lakh for the MX1 petrol to ₹23.52 lakh for the AX7L 4WD diesel automatic, ex-showroom. The MX trims are the simpler versions; the AX3L, AX5L and AX7L add Level 2 ADAS and more technology, while the Star Edition is a blacked-out, well-equipped version without ADAS. Six airbags and ESC are standard throughout.

Do I need 4WD?

Only if you will drive on trails, snow, sand or deep mud. The rear-wheel-drive ROXX has terrain modes and a brake-based locking system that handle bad roads well. 4WD adds ₹2.49 lakh on the MX5 diesel manual and ₹2.26 lakh on the AX5L diesel automatic, plus low range and an electric locking differential.

MX or AX: what is the difference?

The MX trims are the simpler versions. The AX trims, marked with an L, add Level 2 ADAS, a digital instrument cluster, automatic climate control, an electronic parking brake and connected-car features. The AX5L and AX7L automatics also get the stronger 400 Nm diesel.

Thar ROXX or three-door Thar?

Buy the ROXX if the car will carry family members or luggage regularly. Its rear doors, bigger rear seat and boot make it far easier to live with. The three-door Thar is cheaper, smaller and slightly more agile off-road, but it is really a car for one or two people.

Is the Star Edition worth it?

It looks distinctive and has the panoramic sunroof, ventilated seats, 360-degree camera and Harman Kardon audio, at prices below the AX7L. But it has no ADAS, no 4WD and no powered driver seat. If you want those, the AX5L or AX7L is the better buy.
