Force Gurkha 5 Door

The long-wheelbase Gurkha: the same 2.6-litre diesel, 5-speed manual and locking 4x4 hardware as the 3 Door, but with rear doors and seven seats. It suits families who want a tough off-roader they can also use for group trips, and who accept a manual-only, basic cabin.

The only version, at ₹17.58 lakh. Over the 3 Door it is the one we would pick for a family, since rear doors and a third row make it usable every day. Buy it only if the off-road hardware matters; otherwise look at a Mahindra Thar Roxx or Scorpio-N.

Our verdict on the Gurkha 5 Door

The Gurkha 5 Door fixes the 3 Door's biggest problem: getting people in and out. It keeps all the serious off-road kit, including locking differentials front and rear, a snorkel and 233 mm of clearance, and adds a third row. But it is still manual only, with only two airbags and a plain cabin, and there is no petrol or automatic. The longer body also widens the turning circle to 6.3 m. The Mahindra Thar Roxx and Scorpio-N offer automatics, more safety kit and a far larger service network at similar money. We would buy the Gurkha 5 Door only if you regularly drive tough trails or hill roads and want the locking diffs as standard. For most families, a Mahindra is the easier choice.

Good things

  • Rear doors and a third row on a serious off-roader
  • Locking differentials on both axles and low-range 4x4 as standard
  • 233 mm ground clearance and a factory snorkel for deep water
  • Single, fully equipped version keeps buying simple

Could be better

  • Manual only, diesel only, with no automatic option
  • Only two airbags and a basic cabin for close to ₹18 lakh
  • 6.3 m turning radius makes it clumsy in tight spaces
  • Small dealer and service network compared with Mahindra

Force Gurkha 5 Door: the off-roader that can carry the family

Force added the 5 Door to the Gurkha range in 2024. It uses the same ladder-frame platform, 2.6-litre common-rail diesel and running gear as the 3 Door, but the wheelbase grows by 425 mm to 2,825 mm and the body to 4,390 mm. The engine makes 140 PS and 320 Nm and drives through a 5-speed manual and a two-speed transfer case with 2H, 4H and 4L, selected by an electric knob.

It is sold in one version at ₹17.58 lakh ex-showroom, ₹1.33 lakh more than the 3 Door. Force lists it as a seven-seater. Standard kit includes LED headlamps, 18-inch alloys on all-terrain tyres, a 9-inch touchscreen, a digital instrument cluster, tyre pressure monitoring, cornering lamps, dual airbags and ABS with EBD. The air intake snorkel is fitted at the factory.

The off-road hardware is the reason to buy it. Both axles have manually locked differentials, all four wheels sit on coil springs and Force quotes 233 mm of ground clearance and a 700 mm wading depth. The longer wheelbase means it will scrape its belly on sharp crests sooner than the 3 Door, and the 6.3 m turning radius needs planning in town.

Is the Gurkha 5 Door a practical family car?

More than the 3 Door, thanks to rear doors and a third row. But it is tall, so getting in is a climb, the ride is firm, and the cabin is plain. There are only two airbags. If your trips are mostly on tarmac, a Mahindra Scorpio-N or Thar Roxx will be more comfortable.

Gurkha 5 Door or Mahindra Thar Roxx?

The Thar Roxx offers petrol and diesel engines, automatic gearboxes, more airbags and a much bigger service network. The Gurkha 5 Door gives you seven seats, locking differentials on both axles and a snorkel as standard. Choose the Gurkha only if hard off-roading is a regular part of your driving.

What mileage will it give?

Force does not publish an official fuel economy figure for the Gurkha 5 Door. It is heavy and boxy with a 2.6-litre diesel, so expect it to use more fuel than a monocoque SUV of similar size. The 63.5-litre tank gives a fair range on long trips.

Does it give up any off-road ability over the 3 Door?

The engine, axles, diff locks, ground clearance and wading depth are the same. The longer wheelbase and wider 6.3 m turning radius make it harder to thread through tight trails and steep crests, where the shorter 3 Door has the edge.
