Mahindra Scorpio Classic
The Scorpio Classic is the older, body-on-frame Scorpio that Mahindra still sells alongside the Scorpio N. It is a tall, tough, diesel-manual seven or nine-seater for buyers who want ruggedness, a commanding driving position and low-cost upkeep over modern features and safety.

Our verdict on the Scorpio Classic
The Scorpio Classic sells on reputation and toughness. Its body-on-frame construction, 2.2-litre diesel and high seating suit poor roads and heavy loads, and it is cheap to keep running in small towns where Mahindra service is easy to find. But it is an old design. Safety stops at two airbags and ESC, there is no automatic and no four-wheel drive, the ride is bouncy and the side-facing third row is for short trips only. At ₹17.48 lakh, the S11 is close to the Scorpio N, which is safer, better to drive and offers automatic and 4x4 options. Buy the Classic only if you specifically want its simplicity and ruggedness; otherwise, the Scorpio N or XUV 7XO is the better family car.
Good things
- Rugged body-on-frame construction suits bad roads
- Strong low-end pull from the 300 Nm diesel
- Commanding view and easy service reach across India
- Nine-seat option on the base S
Could be better
- Only two airbags in a ₹13-17 lakh car
- No automatic gearbox and no 4x4
- Side-facing third-row seats are cramped and less safe
- S11 price overlaps with the far more modern Scorpio N

Mahindra Scorpio Classic: old-school toughness, old-school cabin
The Scorpio Classic is the continuation of the original Scorpio, updated in 2022 and sold next to the newer Scorpio N. It is 4,456 mm long, 1,995 mm tall and has a 2,680 mm wheelbase. It uses a ladder-frame chassis, which makes it tough and good at soaking up broken roads, but also heavy and less refined than modern monocoque SUVs.
There is one powertrain: a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel making 132 PS and 300 Nm, driving the rear wheels through a 6-speed manual. Claimed fuel economy is 14.44 km/l and the tank holds 60 litres. There is no automatic and no four-wheel-drive option on the Classic; for those, you need the Scorpio N. Front brakes are discs and the rears are drums.
Two trims are sold. The Classic S starts at ₹13.43 lakh ex-showroom with seven seats, or nine seats for a little more. The Classic S11 costs ₹17.48 lakh with either side-facing third-row seats or second-row captain chairs. Both have dual airbags and ESC. Only the S11 gets the touchscreen, automatic climate control, cruise control, alloy wheels and LED daytime running lights.
Scorpio Classic or Scorpio N?
The Scorpio N is the better car for most families. It has a stronger engine, more airbags, an automatic option, 4x4 and a much more comfortable ride. The Classic makes sense if you want the cheapest diesel Scorpio, need nine seats, or prefer its simple mechanicals for rural use.
Is the third row usable?
In the side-facing layouts, the third row is two benches facing each other. They are fine for children or short trips, but adults will find them cramped, and they lack the protection of forward-facing seats. If you need a proper seven-seater, look at forward-facing third rows in other SUVs.
Is the base Classic S worth it?
Only for very basic needs. It has the essential safety kit but no touchscreen, no speakers, no automatic climate control and steel wheels. Private buyers will find the S11 far more pleasant, though the price jump is about ₹4 lakh.
How is the running cost?
Reasonable for its size. The claimed 14.44 km/l is modest, and real-world figures will be lower in traffic. Parts and servicing are inexpensive and widely available, which is one of the Classic's strongest points, especially outside the big cities.
