Mahindra Bolero Neo Plus

A longer, nine-seat version of the Bolero Neo, with a bigger 2.2-litre diesel, a 6-speed manual and a tough body-on-frame build. It suits large families and small businesses in towns and rural areas who need to move many people on rough roads and value toughness over comfort or safety tech.

Our verdict on the Bolero Neo Plus

The Bolero Neo Plus does one job well: it carries a lot of people over bad roads and shrugs off hard use. The 2.2 diesel has more pull than the smaller Bolero Neo's 1.5, and the ladder frame and simple mechanicals suit rural running and long ownership. But the extra seats are side-facing jump seats in the boot, safety stops at two airbags and ABS, there is no automatic, and the cabin is basic for ₹11-12.5 lakh. If you rarely need more than seven seats, a Maruti Ertiga or Kia Carens is safer, more comfortable and easier to live with in the city, and the regular Bolero Neo is cheaper. Buy the Neo Plus only if you truly need nine seats and a rugged diesel, and then pick the P10.

Good things

  • Strong 2.2 diesel with useful low-end pull for a loaded car
  • Tough body-on-frame build that copes with poor roads
  • Seats nine for the price of a mid-size family car
  • Mahindra's wide dealer and service network, including small towns

Could be better

  • Third-row seats face sideways and are best for short trips
  • Only two airbags and no electronic stability control listed
  • Manual gearbox only, with heavy, truck-like manners in traffic
  • Base P4 lacks basics like a rear wiper, ISOFIX and a touchscreen

Mahindra Bolero Neo Plus: nine seats and a big diesel, not much else

The Bolero Neo Plus is a stretched Bolero Neo. At 4,400 mm long it is about 400 mm longer than the regular Neo, and that extra length goes into a rear compartment with side-facing bench seats, making it a nine-seater in a 2-3-4 layout. It shares the ladder-frame chassis, rear-wheel drive and tall, boxy shape that make the Bolero name popular in smaller towns and on rough roads.

Power comes from Mahindra's 2.2-litre mHawk diesel, rated at 88.26 kW (120 PS) and 280 Nm, paired with a 6-speed manual. There is no petrol, no automatic and no four-wheel drive. The claimed ARAI figure is 14 km/l, and the 60-litre tank gives a long range between fills. Front suspension is double wishbone and the rear is multi-link, with disc brakes in front and drums at the back.

Mahindra sells two passenger versions, P4 and P10, both nine-seaters at ₹11.46 lakh and ₹12.56 lakh ex-showroom. Both get dual airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors and power windows. The P10 adds the things most families will want: a 22.8 cm touchscreen, ISOFIX mounts, a rear wiper and defogger, fog lamps, alloy wheels and a folding middle row with an armrest.

Is the Neo Plus a good family car?

Only if you need to seat more than seven people often. The rear jump seats face each other and are tight for adults on long trips. Safety kit is basic. For a family of five to seven, an Ertiga, Carens or even the regular Bolero Neo gives a better mix of comfort, safety and cost.

Bolero Neo or Bolero Neo Plus?

The Neo is under four metres, cheaper and has a 1.5 diesel with seven seats. The Neo Plus costs more, is longer and gets the stronger 2.2 diesel and two more seats. If you do not need the extra seats, the Neo is easier to park and saves money.

Which version should I buy, P4 or P10?

The P10. The P4 has vinyl seats and no rear wiper, defogger, fog lamps, ISOFIX or touchscreen. The P10 fixes all of these for about ₹1.1 lakh more, which also helps resale.

How much space is there for luggage?

Very little with all nine seats in use, as the side-facing seats sit in the boot area. Mahindra quotes up to 696 litres with those seats folded, which is generous for a car this price. Plan on either full seating or full luggage, not both.
