Kia Sorento

The Sorento is Kia’s new three-row SUV for India, sitting between the Carens and the Carnival. It comes with a choice of a 2.2 diesel or a 1.6 turbo-petrol strong hybrid, both automatic, with six or seven seats and all-wheel drive on the top trims. It suits families who want a well-equipped, car-like seven-seater and are weighing efficiency against highway pulling power.

Our pick at each price
  • HTK(A)₹33.49 lakh

The hybrid HTK(A) at ₹34.99 lakh is our pick: it has the curved screens, 360-degree camera, Bose audio and Level 2 ADAS, and the hybrid should be much easier on fuel in city traffic. Choose the diesel version if you mostly drive on highways.

  • HTX₹37.49 lakh

Go for the HTX only if you need all-wheel drive or want the head-up display and ventilated rear seats. It costs ₹4 lakh more than the HTK(A), and in either fuel the extra mostly buys comfort, not safety.

Our verdict on the Sorento

The Sorento gives Kia a proper premium seven-seater in India, and its biggest draw is choice: a strong hybrid for city efficiency, or a 442 Nm diesel for long highway runs, both automatic. Equipment is generous from the HTE(O) upwards, and the mid-level HTK(A) already covers what most families need. Prices run from ₹27.99 lakh to just under ₹40 lakh ex-showroom, which puts it against the Skoda Kodiaq, Toyota Fortuner and MG Gloster. Against the Fortuner it is more comfortable and better equipped but less rugged off-road. Kia has not published fuel economy, ground clearance or boot space, so check these on a test drive. The third row and boot with all seats up are likely to be tight, as in most rivals. We would shortlist the hybrid HTK(A) and drive it back-to-back with a Kodiaq before deciding.

Good things

  • Choice of diesel or strong hybrid, both with automatic gearboxes
  • Generous equipment from the HTE(O) trim upwards
  • All-wheel drive available with both engines
  • Kia’s wide dealer and service network, with an 8-year hybrid battery warranty

Could be better

  • Kia India does not publish fuel economy, ground clearance or boot space
  • AWD only on the two most expensive trims
  • Prices quoted at launch are introductory and may rise
  • Top trims approach ₹40 lakh, close to more established rivals

Kia Sorento: diesel or hybrid, your choice

The Sorento is the facelifted fourth-generation model sold worldwide, and Kia launched it in India on 4 September 2026. It is 4,815 mm long with a 2,820 mm wheelbase and comes in six trims, from HTE to HTX(A). Seven seats are standard, with a six-seat captain-chair layout available from the HTK trim at a small extra cost.

There are two powertrains. The 2.2-litre diesel makes 193 PS and 442 Nm and drives through an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic. The strong hybrid pairs a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol engine (180 PS, 265 Nm) with an electric motor and a 6-speed automatic. At every trim the hybrid costs ₹1.5 lakh more than the diesel. All-wheel drive with terrain modes is fitted to the HTX and HTX(A) with either engine.

Even the entry HTE gets 7 airbags, a 12.3-inch touchscreen and dual-zone climate control. The HTE(O) adds a panoramic sunroof and ventilated front seats. HTK brings curved twin screens, Bose audio and a 360-degree camera, and the (A) trims add Level 2 ADAS. The HTX(A) tops the range with 10 airbags, a dashcam and a digital key.

Should we buy the diesel or the hybrid?

If most of your driving is in the city, the hybrid makes more sense: it can run on electric power at low speeds and should use noticeably less fuel. If you do long highway trips with a full load, the diesel’s 442 Nm makes overtaking easier. Kia has not published official fuel economy, so ask the dealer for the certified figures before you decide.

Which trim is the sweet spot?

The HTK(A). It has the curved screens, Bose audio, 360-degree camera and Level 2 ADAS. The HTX adds AWD and comfort extras for ₹4 lakh more, which only makes sense if you drive on snow, sand or broken tracks, or want ventilated rear seats.

Sorento or Toyota Fortuner?

The Fortuner is a body-on-frame SUV built for rough roads and long life, with very strong resale. The Sorento is more comfortable, more efficient as a hybrid and better equipped for the money. For family use on good roads, the Sorento makes more sense; for heavy off-road use, the Fortuner.

Is the third row usable?

Kia does not publish third-row or boot figures. In most SUVs of this size, the last row suits children or adults on short trips, and luggage space with all seats up is limited. Take the family to the showroom and try all three rows before you book.
