Our verdict on the mu-X
The mu-X is a rugged, honest seven-seater. The ladder frame, 230 mm ground clearance and proper 4x4 with low range make it a real off-roader, and every version gets 6 airbags, rear disc brakes, leather-accented seats and cruise control. But the design is several years old, the 9-inch screen looks dated, and the 1.9 diesel feels stretched in a big, heavy SUV when the cabin is full. The Toyota Fortuner costs more but has a bigger engine, stronger resale and a far wider service network. We would consider the mu-X 4WD only if you need its off-road ability and have an Isuzu workshop nearby; otherwise a Fortuner, or a monocoque rival such as the Skoda Kodiaq if you stay on the road, is the safer buy.

Isuzu mu-X: a tough seven-seater on a pickup base
The mu-X is Isuzu's only SUV in India. It shares its ladder frame and engine with the D-MAX V-Cross pickup, so it is built for rough roads. Both versions use a 1.9-litre turbo diesel with 163 hp and 360 Nm and a 6-speed automatic. The 2WD drives the rear wheels; the 4WD adds shift-on-the-fly four-wheel drive, usable up to 100 km/h, with a low-range setting for steep or loose ground.
Isuzu lists the 2WD at ₹34.53 lakh and the 4WD at ₹37.71 lakh. A 'Premium' price ₹28,000 higher is listed for the 4WD only; Isuzu does not explain it, but it appears to be a paint option. Both versions get the same equipment: 6 airbags, stability and traction control, hill descent, disc brakes on all four wheels, a rear camera, leather-accented seats, a power driver's seat, keyless entry and cruise control.
The body is 4,825 mm long with a 2,845 mm wheelbase, and ground clearance is 230 mm. All three rows get AC vents, with a separate blower for the rear. The boot holds 235 litres with all seats in use, 878 litres with the third row folded and 1,830 litres with both rear rows folded. The 9-inch touchscreen is the weakest part of the cabin.
2WD or 4WD?
Choose the 4WD if you drive on hill roads, sand, snow or muddy tracks. It adds low range and a transfer-case guard for about ₹3.2 lakh. For city and highway driving the 2WD is enough, since it has the same seats, safety kit and ground clearance.
Is the third row usable?
It is fine for children and short trips for adults. The third row splits 50:50 and folds flat, and it gets its own AC vents and cup holders. With all seven seats up, the boot is only 235 litres, so plan for a roof box on long family trips.
How does it compare with the Toyota Fortuner?
The Fortuner costs more but has a larger diesel, stronger resale and much wider service reach. The mu-X is cheaper and just as rugged, with 4x4 and low range. Buy the mu-X only if price matters most and an Isuzu workshop is close by.
Does it have Android Auto and Apple CarPlay?
Isuzu's spec sheet lists a 9-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth, USB and disc playback but does not list Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. Check with the dealer and try it with your phone before you buy.
