Isuzu D-MAX V-Cross
India's original lifestyle pickup, now sold only as a 4x4 double-cab with a 163 hp 1.9-litre diesel. It suits buyers who want a five-seat pickup they can actually use on trails and for hauling, and who accept a firmer rear end and a big footprint in exchange.

The automatic at ₹30.50 lakh is the one we would buy. It is the only V-Cross with 6 airbags, and it adds cruise control, an electric driver's seat and hill start assist, which all matter on long highway and hill runs.
- Z Prestige₹27.50 lakh
If budget is tight, the manual at ₹27.50 lakh keeps the 360-degree camera, 10.3-inch wireless screen, alloys and tyre-pressure monitoring. The catch is that it has only two airbags.

Our verdict on the D-MAX V-Cross
The V-Cross does one thing that few vehicles in India do at this price: a proper 4x4 double-cab pickup with shift-on-the-fly 4WD and an automatic diff lock as standard. The 1.9 diesel is not fast but has the pull for loaded climbs, and the 2026 update brought a big wireless screen and a 360-degree camera. The flaws are real. Only the top automatic has 6 airbags, the leaf-sprung rear is bouncy when the deck is empty, and at over 5.2 metres it is awkward in cities. The Toyota Hilux is more powerful and has wider service reach, but costs more. If you will use the 4x4 and the deck, buy the Z Prestige automatic. If you only want the look, a 4x4 SUV will be easier to live with.
Good things
- Shift-on-the-fly 4x4 and automatic diff lock on every version
- Usable open deck for bikes, camping gear or work loads
- Z Prestige gets a 360-degree camera and a 10.3-inch wireless screen
- Undercuts the Toyota Hilux on price
Could be better
- Only the top automatic gets 6 airbags; the manuals have two
- Leaf-spring rear feels bouncy with an empty deck
- Very long for city parking and tight lanes
- Isuzu's dealer and service network is thin in many regions

Isuzu D-MAX V-Cross: a working 4x4 pickup with lifestyle manners
Isuzu brought the D-MAX V-Cross to India in 2016 and created the lifestyle pickup segment here. It is a five-seat double-cab with an open deck at the back, built on a ladder frame. Every version uses the same 1.9-litre turbo diesel with 163 hp and 360 Nm. The Z and Z Prestige manuals use a 6-speed manual; the Z Prestige automatic has a 6-speed torque converter.
Since the February 2026 update, every V-Cross is a 4x4. The system can switch between two- and four-wheel drive on the move, has a high-torque mode and an automatic differential lock. Isuzu's list price starts at ₹26.01 lakh for the Z and runs to ₹30.50 lakh for the Z Prestige automatic. Isuzu also lists a 'Premium' price about ₹28,000 above each version; it does not say what this covers, but it looks like a paint option.
The Z is fairly basic, with 16-inch steel wheels and a 7-inch wired screen. The Z Prestige adds 18-inch alloys, roof rails, side steps, a 360-degree camera, a 10.3-inch wireless screen and tyre-pressure monitoring. Only the automatic gets 6 airbags, an electric driver's seat and cruise control. The deck takes up to 215 kg on the manuals and 180 kg on the automatic.
Is the V-Cross a commercial vehicle?
No. It is a private double-cab pickup with five seats, sold to individual buyers. Registration and tax rules for pickups vary by state, so check with your RTO and dealer before you buy, especially if you plan to carry goods for business.
Manual or automatic?
We would pay the extra ₹3 lakh for the Z Prestige automatic. Apart from easier driving, it is the only version with 6 airbags, and it adds cruise control, hill start assist and an electric driver's seat. The manuals have just two airbags.
What fuel economy should I expect?
Isuzu does not publish an official ARAI figure. Some listings quote about 12.4 km/l, but expect less in city traffic and with a loaded deck. The tank holds 55 litres, and the engine also needs AdBlue (DEF) from a 14.7-litre tank.
What should I compare it with?
The Toyota Hilux is the direct rival. It has a bigger engine and Toyota's service reach, but costs more. If you do not need an open deck, a ladder-frame SUV such as the Mahindra Scorpio-N 4x4 or Toyota Fortuner may suit family use better.
