Toyota Hilux

Toyota's double-cab pickup, in an all-new generation launched in India in July 2026. It uses the familiar 204 PS 2.8 diesel with a 6-speed automatic only, and now offers a cheaper rear-wheel-drive version alongside the 4x4s. It suits buyers who want a tough, low-stress pickup for farm, site or adventure use, and who can live with a firm ride and a big footprint in town.

Our pick at each price
  • GX 4x4 AT₹33.69 lakh

At ₹33.69 lakh this is the cheapest way to get the Hilux's real strength: low range and a locking rear differential. It keeps the basic cabin, but if you actually go off-road or tow, the ₹1.7 lakh over the 4x2 is well spent.

  • VX 4x4 AT₹36.69 lakh

Pick the ₹36.69 lakh VX if the Hilux will be a daily car. The bigger screen, 360-degree camera, cruise control, keyless entry and terrain modes make a 5.3-metre pickup much easier to live with.

Our verdict on the Hilux

The new Hilux is better finished and better equipped than the old one, and it keeps the robust 2.8 diesel and 4x4 hardware that made the nameplate. The new 4x2 GX lowers the entry price, but a Hilux without four-wheel drive makes less sense, as it gives up the very ability that justifies a pickup. All versions are automatic only, the AC is manual even on the VX, and India misses the ADAS offered abroad. Unladen, a leaf-sprung pickup rides firmer than an SUV, and the length makes city parking hard. If you need a load bed and real off-road ability, we would buy the GX 4x4 or the VX. If you mainly carry people, a Fortuner is the more comfortable buy, and an Isuzu V-Cross is the cheaper pickup to compare.

Good things

  • Strong 500 Nm diesel and a smooth 6-speed automatic
  • Proper 4x4 kit with low range and a rear diff lock
  • Toyota's wide service network and strong resale record
  • VX is well equipped, with a 360-degree camera and wireless phone mirroring

Could be better

  • No manual gearbox, and manual AC on every version
  • Rear drum brakes and a leaf-sprung rear that rides firmly unladen
  • 5.3 metres long, so parking and tight streets are a chore
  • GX versions get a small 8-inch screen and bulb tail-lamps

Toyota Hilux: the tough pickup gets a modern cabin

The Hilux is Toyota's double-cab pickup, built on the same ladder-frame family as the Fortuner and Innova Crysta. The new generation went on sale in India in July 2026 with a fresh design, a new dashboard and more equipment. It is offered only as a five-seat double cab, and Toyota now sells a rear-wheel-drive GX next to the 4x4 versions.

Every Hilux uses the 2.8-litre turbo diesel with 204 PS and 500 Nm, paired with a 6-speed torque-converter automatic. The manual has been dropped. The 4x4s add high and low ranges, an electronic rear differential lock and a 2WD/4WD switch; the VX also gets multi-terrain select and downhill assist. The fuel tank holds 80 litres. Toyota does not publish a fuel-economy figure.

On the GX trims you get 7 airbags, stability control, a rear camera, LED headlamps, 17-inch alloys and an 8-inch touchscreen with wired phone mirroring. The VX adds a 12.3-inch screen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 360-degree camera, cruise control, keyless entry, a wireless charger, 8 speakers, tyre pressure monitoring and a PM2.5 cabin filter.

Should I buy the 4x2 or a 4x4 Hilux?

Buy the 4x2 only if you need a load bed for road use and want the lowest price. Most Hilux buyers choose it for rough tracks, sand, snow or towing, and that needs the 4x4's low range and diff lock. The GX 4x4 is about ₹1.7 lakh more than the 4x2 and is the version we would start with.

Hilux or Fortuner: which should I pick?

They share the engine and much of the hardware. The Fortuner seats seven, has coil springs at the back and rides better, so it suits families. The Hilux suits buyers who need an open load bed. A Hilux GX 4x4 costs less than any Fortuner 4x4, but you give up the third row and some comfort.

Is the Hilux easy to live with in a city?

Not very. At 5,320 mm it is longer than most SUVs, has a 6.3 m turning radius and is hard to park in tight spaces. The VX's 360-degree camera helps a lot. Check your parking spot and building ramps before you book, and ask your RTO how a pickup is registered and taxed in your state.

What does the VX add over the GX?

Mostly comfort and convenience: the 12.3-inch screen, wireless phone mirroring, 360-degree camera, cruise control, push-button start, wireless charger, LED tail-lamps and fog lamps, and tyre pressure monitoring. It also adds multi-terrain select and downhill assist, and is the only version offered in Sulphur Metallic and Attitude Black.
