Our verdict on the Carens Clavis EV
The Clavis EV fills a real gap: a mainstream electric car that seats six or seven. It keeps the petrol Clavis's practical cabin, tumbling second row and usable third row, and adds quiet, smooth electric drive. The trade-offs are range and boot. A 490 km claim will shrink with a full load and highway speeds, and with all three rows up the boot is small. The EV costs a few lakh more than a comparable petrol or diesel Clavis automatic, so it makes sense if you drive a lot in the city and can charge at home. For long highway trips with a full family, the diesel Clavis or a Toyota Innova HyCross remains less stressful. The BYD eMAX 7 is the other electric three-row option to compare.
Good things
- Six- or seven-seat practicality in an electric car
- Long-range version claims 490 km and has 171 PS
- Six airbags, ESC and four-wheel disc brakes as standard
- Well-equipped mid trims with sunroof, ADAS and 360-degree camera
Could be better
- Small boot with all three rows in use
- Range drops noticeably with a full load on the highway
- Ventilated seats and Bose audio only from ₹24.5 lakh
- Home charger is an extra-cost accessory

Kia Carens Clavis EV: seven seats, no fuel tank
The Clavis EV uses the same body as the petrol and diesel Carens Clavis: 4,550 mm long, with a 2,780 mm wheelbase and three rows. Kia sells it with seven seats, or six with second-row captain chairs from the HTX E trim at the same price. Kia does not publish ground clearance or boot volume for the EV; reviewers quote 200 mm of clearance and a 216-litre boot with all rows up, plus a 25-litre front boot.
Two batteries are offered. The 42 kWh pack makes 135 PS and claims 404 km; the 51.4 kWh extended-range (ER) pack makes 171 PS and claims 490 km. Torque is 255 Nm in both. On a 100 kW DC charger, 10 to 80% takes around 39 minutes. An 11 kW home wallbox takes about four to five hours for a full charge and is sold separately.
Every version has six airbags, ESC, four disc brakes, twin 12.25-inch screens and front and rear parking sensors. HTX E adds the sunroof and leatherette seats, HTX trims add Level 2 ADAS and a 360-degree camera, and HTX+ ER brings ventilated front seats, Bose audio and V2L. GTX and X-Line versions are styling packs, with a battery heater and digital key on GTX+ ER and X-Line ER.
Is the third row usable?
Yes, for children and adults on shorter trips. The second row tumbles forward electrically at the touch of a button, so getting in is easy. With all seats up the boot only takes soft bags, so plan to use a roof carrier or fold one side of the third row for family holidays.
Clavis EV or the petrol/diesel Clavis?
The EV costs more upfront but much less to run per km if you charge at home. If you drive mostly in the city and cover 1,500 km or more a month, the EV makes sense. For frequent long trips with a full car, the diesel Clavis is simpler to live with.
Which battery should a family pick?
Pick the 51.4 kWh ER battery if you ever leave the city with the family. Weight from passengers and luggage cuts range, and the larger pack gives you a sensible buffer. The 42 kWh versions are fine for a city-only second car.
What are the alternatives?
The BYD eMAX 7 is the other three-row electric MPV and has a larger battery, but costs more and has a smaller service network. If you do not need seven seats, the Hyundai Creta Electric and Tata Harrier EV are worth a look.
