Our verdict on the Sierra
The Sierra is a properly roomy mid-size SUV with a long wheelbase, a high seating position and a strong safety kit list from the base car up. The diesel is the pick of the engines, with good claimed economy and a choice of gearboxes. The 106 PS petrol is adequate in town but will feel stretched with a full load on the highway, and the stronger turbo-petrol only comes with the automatic from ₹18.14 lakh, which pushes it into Creta and Seltos turbo territory. Tata's after-sales record is uneven by city, so check your local workshop before you sign. If you want the newest-feeling cabin in this class and can live with a young model's teething risk, the Sierra is worth a test drive. If proven reliability matters more, the Creta remains the safer bet.

Tata Sierra: a big-cabin tata for the creta crowd
The Sierra is Tata's new mid-size SUV, slotted between the Nexon and the Harrier. It measures 4,340 mm long with a 2,730 mm wheelbase and 205 mm of ground clearance, so it is longer between the wheels than most rivals at this price. It seats five, and Tata quotes a boot of 622 litres. The design leans on the original Sierra's upright shape, with a flat roof and big glass area.
There are three engines. The 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol makes 106 PS and pairs with a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic. The 1.5-litre turbo-petrol makes 160 PS and 255 Nm and comes only with a 6-speed automatic. The 1.5-litre diesel makes 118 PS, with 260 Nm in the manual and 280 Nm in the automatic. Claimed economy runs from 15.3 km/l for the turbo automatic to 21.26 km/l for the diesel manual.
Prices start at ₹11.49 lakh ex-showroom for the Smart+ petrol manual and climb to ₹21.59 lakh for the Accomplished+ Dark diesel automatic. Every version gets six airbags, ESC, disc brakes all round and an electronic parking brake. The Dark edition adds Carbon Black paint and a violet-themed interior to selected trims for ₹20,000 to ₹30,000 more.
Which engine should I choose?
For high mileage, take the diesel. It is the most economical on paper and is offered with both a manual and a torque-converter automatic. For mostly city use with occasional trips, the 1.5 petrol is fine and costs less, and the DCT is available from Pure. If you want brisk petrol performance, the 160 PS turbo is the one, but it is automatic-only and starts at the Adventure+ trim.
Is the base Smart+ worth buying?
Only if the budget is fixed at about ₹11.5 lakh. It has the important safety kit, but no touchscreen, no rear camera and steel wheels. Pure adds the screen, wireless phone mirroring, camera and cruise control for ₹1.65 lakh more on the petrol, and that is money well spent for most buyers.
How does it compare with the Hyundai Creta?
The Sierra has a longer wheelbase and more equipment for similar money in the middle trims. The Creta has a broader service network, a longer track record and a strong resale history. Drive both. If the Sierra's space and features win you over and your local Tata workshop has a good name, it makes sense; otherwise the Creta is the lower-risk choice.
Is the Dark edition worth the extra?
It is purely cosmetic: black paint, dark badges, black wheels and a violet interior theme, for ₹20,000 to ₹30,000 over the matching standard variant. Black paint shows swirl marks and dust easily in Indian conditions. Buy it only if you like the look.
