Our verdict on the Syros EV
The Syros EV takes a smart, practical body and makes it quieter and cheaper to run. The rear seat and headroom are generous for a car under four metres, and the long-range battery is competitive with rivals such as the Tata Nexon EV and Mahindra XUV 3XO EV. Kia's lifetime battery warranty for the first owner is reassuring. The weak spot is value at the top: at ₹20 lakh, the X-Line ER costs about the same as a base long-range Hyundai Creta Electric, which is a bigger car. We would stop at the HTX ER or HTX, unless you specifically want ADAS and a 360-degree camera. As with any EV, buy it only if home or office charging is sorted.
Good things
- Roomy, upright cabin with a sliding and reclining rear seat
- Long-range version claims 526 km and has 171 PS
- Strong safety kit as standard: 6 airbags, ESC, four disc brakes
- Lifetime high-voltage battery warranty for the first owner
Could be better
- Top X-Line costs as much as a bigger long-range Creta Electric
- ADAS and 360-degree camera only on the most expensive version
- Boot is modest at 390 litres with the rear seat in normal position
- Home charger is an extra-cost accessory

Kia Syros EV: a roomy compact suv, now battery-powered
The Syros EV keeps the petrol Syros's squared-off body, 3,995 mm length and 2,550 mm wheelbase, so it fits the same parking spots while giving rear passengers more headroom and kneeroom than most compact SUVs. Kia adds a small front boot and a side charging port. Ground clearance is reported at 197 mm, slightly more than the petrol car's.
There are two batteries. The 42 kWh pack makes 135 PS and claims 443 km; the 51.4 kWh extended-range (ER) pack makes 171 PS and claims 526 km. Both share 255 Nm of torque, a single-speed gearbox and paddles to adjust regenerative braking. On a 100 kW DC charger, 10 to 80% takes about 39 minutes. An 11 kW wallbox takes around four to five hours for a full charge and is sold separately.
Every version gets six airbags, ESC, four disc brakes, twin 12.3-inch screens and wireless phone mirroring. HTX trims add a panoramic sunroof and a sliding, reclining rear seat. HTX+ ER brings ventilated front and rear seats, Harman Kardon audio and a powered driver seat, while the X-Line ER adds Level 2 ADAS, a 360-degree camera, V2L and a digital key.
Should I buy the 42 kWh or the extended-range battery?
If your daily driving is under 100 km and you charge at home, the 42 kWh versions are enough and cost ₹2 lakh less like for like. If you make regular intercity trips, the ER battery's extra range and power are worth paying for. The ER also gets 17-inch wheels and, at HTX+ ER and above, a battery heater.
Syros EV or Hyundai Creta Electric?
The Creta Electric is longer, with a bigger boot, but costs more version for version. The Syros EV has a more upright cabin and a sliding rear seat, and is easier to park. If your budget tops out around ₹18 lakh, the Syros EV HTX ER is the better buy; above ₹20 lakh, look at the Creta Electric.
What is Kia's Battery-as-a-Service plan?
It is a finance scheme where the battery and the car are funded separately, so the upfront price is lower and you pay a per-km charge for the battery. It can suit high-mileage users. Read the terms carefully and compare the total cost over your expected ownership against a normal loan.
Which rivals should I test drive?
Drive the Tata Nexon EV and Mahindra XUV 3XO EV, which are similar in size and price, and the Hyundai Creta Electric if you can stretch your budget. The Tata Punch EV is cheaper and smaller if you mostly drive in town.
