BMW X1 LWB

A long-wheelbase X1 built for India, with a 2,800 mm wheelbase and a 156 PS 1.5-litre turbo petrol. At ₹49.9 lakh it is the cheapest BMW SUV and undercuts the standard diesel X1. It suits a family that wants a roomy back seat and a premium badge without moving up to the X3.

Our verdict on the X1 LWB

The X1 LWB is the BMW SUV most families should look at first. It costs ₹49.9 lakh ex-showroom, ₹3 lakh less than the standard diesel X1, yet its longer wheelbase gives a much more generous back seat and a 540-litre boot. The 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol is adequate rather than quick, and BMW's published fuel figure for it looks wrong, so ask the dealer for the certified number. It is front-wheel drive only. If you can charge at home, the electric iX1 LWB is worth a look for ₹4.8 lakh more. Against the 2 Series Gran Coupé, the X1 LWB offers far more space for about ₹1 lakh over the 218 M Sport Pro.

Good things

  • Roomy rear seat thanks to the 2,800 mm wheelbase.
  • Large 540-litre boot.
  • Cheapest BMW SUV and cheaper than the standard X1.

Could be better

  • Three-cylinder petrol is not quick.
  • Front-wheel drive only.
  • BMW's published fuel economy figure is unclear.

BMW X1 LWB: the family-friendly BMW SUV

BMW launched the X1 LWB in India in August 2026. It shares its long-wheelbase body with the electric iX1 LWB: 4,616 mm long with a 2,800 mm wheelbase. Power comes from a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol with 156 PS and 230 Nm, driving the front wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.

The extra wheelbase goes into the rear cabin, and the boot holds 540 litres. Equipment includes a panoramic glass roof, Veganza upholstery, BMW's curved display running OS 9 and 18-inch alloy wheels. BMW India has not published a reliable fuel figure or ground clearance for this model. Ask the dealer for the certified figure.

X1 LWB or the standard X1?

The LWB is ₹3 lakh cheaper and roomier, but petrol only. The standard X1 is diesel only and better for heavy highway use. For most families, the LWB is the better buy.

X1 LWB or iX1 LWB?

The electric iX1 LWB costs ₹4.8 lakh more, is quicker off the line and much cheaper to run if you charge at home. The petrol X1 LWB is simpler for long trips without charging plans.

Is the 1.5-litre engine enough for a family SUV?

It copes well in the city and at highway cruising speeds. With a full load and luggage, overtaking takes planning. Buyers who want more power should look at the X3.
