Renault Kiger
Renault's sub-four-metre SUV, updated in 2025 with a new face, six airbags as standard and ventilated seats on the top trim. It is one of the cheapest ways into a compact SUV, with a 72 PS 1.0 petrol in lower trims and a 100 PS turbo higher up. It suits budget buyers who want SUV looks and 205 mm of ground clearance more than outright refinement.

Our verdict on the Kiger
The Kiger makes most sense at the lower and middle of its price list, where it undercuts rivals such as the Nexon, Venue and Kylaq by a clear margin and still has six airbags and ESC as standard. The 72 PS engine is adequate in town but strained with a full load on highways; the 100 PS turbo is the one to have if you travel. Cabin plastics and refinement are a step below Tata, Hyundai and Skoda, and Renault's dealer network is thinner, so check service reach before you buy. At ₹10 lakh and above we would look at a Kylaq or Nexon instead. For a well-equipped compact SUV around ₹7–8.5 lakh, the Kiger is a sensible buy.
Good things
- Low starting price with six airbags and ESC as standard
- 205 mm ground clearance and a 405-litre boot
- Turbo petrol with manual or CVT automatic
- Ventilated seats and multi-view camera on the top trim
Could be better
- 72 PS base engine feels weak with a full load
- Cabin quality and refinement trail Tata, Hyundai and Skoda rivals
- Renault's service network is thinner than Maruti's or Hyundai's
- No factory-fitted CNG; only a dealer kit in select states

Renault Kiger: a budget compact SUV with the safety basics covered
The Kiger is Renault's compact SUV, built in Chennai on the same base as the Triber and Nissan Magnite. The 2025 update gave it a new nose with the latest Renault badge, LED headlamps on Techno and above, six airbags across the range, and ventilated leatherette front seats on the Emotion trim. Two new paints, Oasis Yellow and Shadow Grey, also arrived.
Two 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engines are offered. The naturally aspirated unit makes 72 PS and 96 Nm with a 5-speed manual or AMT. The turbo makes 100 PS, with 160 Nm in the manual and 152 Nm with the CVT automatic. Claimed economy ranges from about 17.6 km/l for the CVT to 20.38 km/l for the turbo manual.
Despite being under four metres long, the Kiger has a 405-litre boot, 205 mm of ground clearance and roof bars rated for 50 kg from Techno upwards. Rear knee room is generous for the class. Every version gets six airbags, ESC, traction control, hill start assist and tyre pressure monitoring. Renault offers a 3-year/1 lakh km standard warranty.
Should I choose the 1.0 or the 1.0 turbo?
The non-turbo engine is fine for city commuting with two or three people. If you regularly drive on highways, carry four adults or want an automatic that feels relaxed, pick the turbo. The turbo is first offered on Evolution+ and costs about ₹90,000 more than the same trim's non-turbo manual.
AMT or CVT?
The AMT comes with the 72 PS engine and is the cheaper automatic, but gear changes are slower and jerkier. The CVT pairs with the 100 PS turbo and is smoother, but it is offered only on Techno and Emotion and starts at ₹9.40 lakh.
Is the Kiger safe?
Every Kiger now has six airbags, ESC, traction control, hill start assist and tyre pressure monitoring. Check the latest crash-test rating for the updated car before you buy, as earlier ratings were for the pre-2025 model.
How does it compare with the Nissan Magnite?
They share engines, gearboxes and the platform. Compare the price of the trim you want, the equipment at that price and the closest Renault or Nissan workshop, as both networks are smaller than Maruti's or Hyundai's.
