Our verdict on the Magnite

The Magnite is good value at the lower and middle of its price list. Even the base Visia gets six airbags, ESC and tyre pressure monitoring, and the Visia+ adds wireless phone mirroring and a rear camera for about ₹6.3 lakh. The 72 PS engine is slow with a full load, so highway users should pay for the turbo. The boot is smaller than a Kiger's, cabin materials are basic in lower trims, and Nissan's dealer network is thin in many towns, which can hurt service and resale. Above ₹10 lakh, the Kylaq, Nexon or Venue feel more polished. For a safe, well-equipped city SUV between ₹6.3 and ₹9 lakh, the Magnite is worth a look.

Nissan Magnite: big-car safety kit at a small-car price

The Magnite is Nissan's sub-four-metre SUV, built in Chennai and now exported to many markets in the same specification. It shares its platform and engines with the Renault Kiger. The current version brought six airbags, ESC, traction control and tyre pressure monitoring to every variant, with features such as a 360-degree camera and quilted leatherette seats higher up.

Two 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engines are offered. The naturally aspirated unit makes 72 PS and 96 Nm with a 5-speed manual (19.4 km/l claimed) or 5-speed AMT (19.7 km/l). The turbo makes 100 PS, with 160 Nm in the manual (19.9 km/l) and 152 Nm with the CVT automatic (17.9 km/l). The turbo is offered from N-Connecta with the manual and from Acenta with the CVT.

The Magnite is 3,994 mm long with a 2,500 mm wheelbase, 205 mm of ground clearance and a 336-litre boot that grows to 690 litres with the rear seat folded. Roof rails rated for 50 kg are standard on every version. Nissan gives a 3-year/1 lakh km standard warranty that can be extended to 10 years at extra cost.

Is the base Visia worth buying?

It has the key safety kit, but no touchscreen, steel wheels and halogen lamps. For ₹56,600 more, Visia+ adds a 9-inch touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a rear camera and a rear wiper. We think that is money well spent.

AMT or CVT?

The AMT is paired with the 72 PS engine and is the cheaper automatic, but it is slower and less smooth. The CVT comes with the 100 PS turbo, is much nicer to drive and starts at ₹9.30 lakh. Claimed economy is lower for the CVT at 17.9 km/l.

What is the Kuro Edition?

Kuro is an all-black version based on N-Connecta, with black alloys, black trim inside, a wireless charger and a dashcam. It costs ₹25,000–35,000 more than the matching N-Connecta and is only worth it if you like the look.

How does it compare with the Renault Kiger?

They share engines, gearboxes and the platform. The Kiger has a bigger 405-litre boot, while the Magnite offers more trims and a 360-degree camera. Compare prices for the equipment you want and check which brand's workshop is nearer.
