Tata Curvv: which variant and which engine?

Tata's coupe-SUV gives you petrol, diesel and a turbo, plus a long features list. The styling is the easy part — the price list is where the real decision is.

The Tata Curvv

What is good

  • Three engines — few rivals let you choose a turbo-petrol, a frugal petrol and a diesel under one roof
  • Panoramic sunroof, ventilated seats and Level 2 ADAS on the higher trims
  • Tata's 5-star body shell — among the safest ways to spend this money

What is not

  • The coupe roofline costs a little rear headroom and some boot squareness versus a boxy SUV
  • The ladder is long and the jumps are uneven — it's easy to walk out having overspent
  • Tata's touchscreen software is better than it was, but still the weak link against Hyundai and Kia

What the showroom won't lead with

A salesperson will walk you to the Curvv's profile first, because the roofline is what sells it on Instagram. We'll start somewhere less flattering and more useful: the price list, and the engine under the bonnet, because you'll live with those two things for years and the silhouette for about a week.

This is a buying guide, not a road test. We haven't driven this exact car, so you won't find ride-and-handling verdicts here that anyone could only be guessing at after a launch. What we can do is read the ladder honestly and tell you which rung and which engine are the clever spend.

The ladder, and what each rung costs

Five trims — Smart, Pure, Creative, Accomplished and Accomplished+ — spread across a 1.2 turbo-petrol, a 1.2 Hyperion petrol and a 1.5 diesel. Every figure below is ex-showroom and indicative; prices move with offers and by state, and the on-road number adds road tax, registration and insurance. Tell us your city and we'll work the real total out with you.

The engine choice that actually matters

The 1.2 turbo-petrol is the one to have for most people: it's keen enough to make the Curvv feel as quick as it looks, it's the cheapest route into the trims worth buying, and it won't punish you at the pump in the city.

The 1.5 diesel costs roughly a lakh more at each trim. It only makes that back if you're covering real distance — think 1,500 km a month or more — where its economy and easy highway torque genuinely count. The Hyperion petrol is the smooth, efficient middle option, a touch down on outright punch. Pick the engine around your actual week, not the badge on the tailgate; we can run your monthly mileage against all three and tell you which one truly saves you money.

Where the money actually goes

The step from Pure to Creative is the one that earns its keep: for about ₹1.8 lakh you gain the bigger screen, auto climate, a rear camera and the softer-touch cabin that makes the Curvv feel like the ₹14-lakh car it is. That is the rung we'd tell most buyers to climb to and then stop.

Everything above Creative is about desire, not need. The panoramic roof is lovely on a hill drive; the ventilated seats earn their place in a Nagpur summer; the ADAS is reassuring on the highway. If those are genuinely on your list, Accomplished is money well spent. If you're nodding along just because the showroom lit them up, you're about to pay ₹2.5 lakh for features you'll use twice a year.

If you asked us in the showroom

We'd point you straight at the Creative 1.2 turbo-petrol and tell you it's the honest sweet spot — the Curvv at its best value, with nothing important missing. If your budget comfortably clears ₹16 lakh and you actually want the sunroof and ADAS, step up to Accomplished with a clear conscience; just don't stop halfway and pay for comfort while declining the safety kit.

And if outright practicality matters more than the silhouette, we'd say so plainly — a boxier SUV at the same money carries more and sees better out of the back. Tell us how you'll really use it and we'll tell you whether the Curvv's style is worth its small compromises for you.
