Kia Sorento: diesel or hybrid, and the trim worth buying

The Sorento runs from ₹27.99 lakh for the HTE diesel to ₹39.99 lakh for the HTX(A) hybrid, ex-showroom. Six trims, two engines, both automatic, and a ₹1.5 lakh hybrid premium at every rung. Here is where the money is well spent.

What is good

  • Automatic, seven airbags, ESC and seven seats even on the ₹27.99 lakh HTE
  • Level 2 ADAS from HTK(A), Level 2+ with 30 features on HTX(A)
  • A 442 Nm diesel and a strong hybrid on every trim, so you pick the engine, not the trim

What is not

  • Kia has not published a claimed mileage for either engine yet
  • All-wheel drive only on the two most expensive trims
  • 179 litres of boot with all three rows up: pack soft bags for a seven-up trip

What the showroom won’t lead with

The Sorento ladder runs from ₹27.99 lakh for the HTE diesel to ₹39.99 lakh for the HTX(A) hybrid, ex-showroom. Same 4,815 mm body, same 2,815 mm wheelbase, same automatic gearbox logic: there is no manual, and no affordable petrol to undercut the list.

That makes the Sorento simpler than it looks. There are six trims, and every one comes with either engine. The hybrid costs ₹1.5 lakh more than the diesel at every rung. Settle the engine first, then pick the trim; the two decisions don’t interfere.

The ladder, and what each rung costs

Read the table by row. HTE and HTE(O) are seven-seaters on 18-inch wheels. From HTK you can choose six seats (two captain chairs) or seven, on 19-inch wheels. HTK(A) adds Level 2 ADAS. HTX brings all-wheel drive with Snow, Sand and Mud modes and ten airbags; HTX(A) adds Level 2+ ADAS with Kia’s full list of assists.

TrimDiesel 8-DCTHybrid 6-AT
HTE₹27.99 L₹29.49 L
HTE(O)₹29.49 L₹30.99 L
HTK₹32.49 L₹33.99 L
HTK(A)₹33.49 L₹34.99 L
HTX₹37.49 L₹38.99 L
HTX(A)₹38.49 L₹39.99 L

Ex-showroom, indicative, October 2026. Kia also lists Black Line versions of HTK(A), HTX and HTX(A) without separate prices. Ask us for the on-road number in your state.

Diesel or hybrid: two different cars under one badge

The diesel is a 2.2-litre with 193 PS and 442 Nm from 1,750 rpm, through an 8-speed dual-clutch. That torque, that early, is what a 1.9-tonne seven-seater wants on a loaded highway overtake or a ghat climb.

The hybrid pairs a 180 PS 1.6 turbo-petrol with a 65 PS electric motor and a 6-speed automatic. In stop-start traffic it can creep on the motor, and it is quieter and smoother than any diesel. Kia backs its battery for 8 years or 1,60,000 km.

When the hybrid actually pays back

Kia hasn’t published a claimed mileage for either engine, so there is no honest payback number yet. The test is simple, though. The hybrid costs ₹1.5 lakh more, plus a little more road tax in most states. To earn that back on fuel, it has to save you about ₹1,500 a month for eight years.

That happens when most of your driving is slow city traffic, where the motor does the work. On long highway runs a diesel at a steady 90 km/h is hard to beat, and diesel is more affordable per litre. Mostly highway: diesel. Mostly town, and a quieter cabin matters to you: hybrid. Don’t buy the hybrid for the ‘green’ badge alone.

Where the money actually goes

The biggest jump on the ladder is HTK(A) to HTX: ₹4 lakh. For that you get all-wheel drive with terrain modes, ten airbags instead of seven, and a richer cabin. If you live in the hills or drive to snow every year, all-wheel drive is the one thing on this list you can’t add later.

If you don’t, that ₹4 lakh buys nothing you’ll use every day. Every Sorento already has ESC, hill assist and vehicle stability management. Front-wheel drive with good tyres will get a family to Manali in May.

The third row, and the boot behind it

With all three rows up, the boot is 179 litres: soft bags and a stroller, not four suitcases. Fold the third row and it grows to 813 litres. If you’ll often travel seven up with luggage, a roof box is worth budgeting for, and the six-seat layout from HTK makes the third row easier to reach.

Against its rivals, the Sorento slots between the Kia Carens Clavis and the Carnival. It undercuts the petrol-only Skoda Kodiaq (from ₹36.99 lakh) and VW Tayron (from ₹41.99 lakh), and overlaps the Jeep Meridian diesel.

If you asked us in the showroom

We’d point you at the HTK(A) diesel at ₹33.49 lakh. It has everything that keeps a family safe and comfortable on a long drive, including the ADAS that takes the strain out of a six-hour expressway day, and it leaves ₹5 lakh on the table compared with the top trim.

Take the hybrid version of the same trim if you mostly drive in the city. Step up to HTX only for all-wheel drive. And before you sign, ask the dealer for the Black Line price in writing: it is listed, but not priced on Kia’s site yet.
