How to negotiate at the dealership without getting played

The sticker game is rigged in the dealer's favour by design — they do this every day and you do it every few years. A little preparation turns the table more than any clever line.

Why you can't win on the sticker

The ex-showroom price is set by the manufacturer, and a dealer's margin on the car itself is thin. So haggling hard on that number mostly annoys everyone and moves little. The buyers who 'got a great deal' almost always got it somewhere other than the headline price.

Knowing that, you stop wasting your leverage on the one number that won't budge and spend it where the dealer actually has room to give.

Where the real give is

Insurance is the biggest: you don't have to buy the dealer's policy at all, and even if you do, you can strip the add-ons. Accessories are next — the 'essential pack' of mats, cameras and films is heavily marked up; buy what you want aftermarket. Then the soft charges: 'handling', 'logistics', 'pre-delivery'. Ask what they're for, in writing, and watch some of them shrink.

Finally, ask about the corporate discount, exchange bonus and any running offer — these are real and often unmentioned unless you raise them.

The preparation that does the work

Get the full on-road breakup in writing before you commit to anything. Collect a quote from a second dealership — the ex-showroom is identical, so the difference is all in the add-ons, and showing one quote to another dealer is quietly powerful. Buy near month, quarter or financial-year end, when sales targets make dealers more flexible.

And be genuinely willing to walk. The buyer who can leave is the buyer who gets the call back with a better number.

What we'd do

We'd leave the ex-showroom alone, demand a written breakup, buy insurance separately or strip its add-ons, decline the accessory pack, question every soft charge, and time the purchase for a target-driven week. No drama, no clever lines — just preparation the dealer isn't expecting.

Tell us the car and the quote you've got, and we'll tell you exactly which lines to push and roughly what a fair out-the-door price looks like in your city.
