Is a sunroof worth it, or just for show?

Almost every new car now offers a sunroof, and the panoramic one is often the reason people jump to the top variant. Having lived with them through an Indian summer, here is our honest take on when it earns its money and when it just adds heat and a leak to worry about.

Best for
Cool evenings, hill drives
Worst for
May-June afternoons
Watch later
Drain channels can clog
Adds
A little weight and cost
Our rule
Buy for joy, not for resale

Single sunroof or panoramic?

A single sunroof sits over the front seats and opens fully, so you actually get fresh air. A panoramic sunroof is a much larger glass roof that stretches over the rear seats too; on many cars only the front section slides open, and the rear is fixed glass.

Panoramic roofs look stunning and make the cabin feel airy, which is why they sell top variants. But remember that the big fixed pane is mostly for light, not air. If open-air driving is the point for you, check how much of the roof actually opens before you pay the premium.

The Indian weather reality

For a large part of the year, a May afternoon in most of India is not sunroof weather. The glass lets in heat, the AC works harder, and the sunshade becomes the part you use most. A light-coloured interior and a good sunshade help, but physics is physics.

Where a sunroof genuinely shines is the cool season, early mornings, late evenings, and trips to the hills. If that matches how and where you drive, it moves from gimmick to genuine pleasure.

Will it leak?

A modern sunroof is not open to the rain, it channels water through small drain pipes to the underside of the car. Problems start years later when leaves and dust clog those drains and water backs up into the cabin. It is avoidable: once or twice a year, have the service centre clean the drain channels, especially before the monsoon.

Treat it like any seal on the car. Looked after, it is fine for the life of the car. Ignored, it becomes the damp smell nobody can find.

What it costs you beyond money

A sunroof adds a little weight up high and takes a sliver of headroom for tall rear passengers. Neither is a dealbreaker on most cars, but if you are very tall or you often carry four adults, sit in the back of the exact variant before you decide.

There is also the resale myth. A sunroof helps a car feel desirable when you sell, but it is rarely worth jumping two variants for on that basis alone. Buy it because you will enjoy it, not as an investment.

If you asked us in the showroom

If you love the idea of the roof open on a cool evening or a drive to the hills, get it and enjoy it, just keep the drains clean. If you are only considering the top variant because it is the one with the panoramic roof, pause and check what else that jump buys you. Nine times out of ten, the safety features and the better seats matter more to daily life than the glass overhead.
